Everyone has a high school best friend. Unfortunately, as the years go by, we oftentimes fall out of touch or just grow apart entirely. Thanks to Facebook, it seems like most of us are in touch with our past a lot more than we used to be! I have reconnected with several old friends and coworkers I hadn’t talked to in years and years, thanks to good old Facebook. But I’m lucky, too, in that my high school best friends are still in my life. We don’t see each other very often, but when we do, it’s just magical. It’s like no time has passed at all. There’s never any awkward re-acquaintance period. We just pick up right where we left off, laughing until we cry, just like we did twenty plus years ago.
Over these past few weeks, I’ve had the most awesome time catching up with my friend Debra. She lives a couple of hours away, but has been right in my fine city for job training and we’ve had done so much together! Dinner, shopping, crafts, mani-pedis, Starbucks, brunch in my kitchen, and we’ve even sat side by side on metal bleachers watching my 9-year-old twins in double header softball games. It has been nothing short of spectacular. How rare it is in our busy, grown up lives, that we get to spend any time at all with the people we grew up with – and I’ve been lucky enough to spend several weeks with my high school bestie. Undoubtedly the most time we’ve spent together since we were teenagers.
The other day, I was looking for an old picture on Facebook, and I ended up coming across this picture of Debra and me, circa 1987. We are fifteen and sixteen in this picture!
When I saw it, I knew we had to recreate it. We didn’t have any sweet hats, but we still did our best.
We’re like fine wine, just getting better with age! Right? Right??
