The girls’ room is finally done. Well, almost done. Done enough for the big reveal! Actually, we had a little unveiling party a few weeks ago with some of my mommy friends and their kiddos, to show off all of our hard work! Here’s what I didn’t mention in my previous post. While Pauly and I were sitting in the girls’ room, chatting away while I painted, I asked him if he could think of any other configuration for the girls’ beds that would give them any more room. The bedrooms in our house are WEE, and we essentially have wall-to-wall twin beds. The girls had a small amount of space at the foot of their beds and in between, and that was IT. Here’s a little look at the girls’ bedroom before:
I knew there wasn’t much of a chance of laying things out differently, but you never know with my engineer hubby. Sometimes he sees things differently than I do. After glancing around the room and making some mental calculations, Paul surprised me when he suggested building custom LOFT BEDS for the girls! I worried about the expense, but that man of mine is crafty as hell, and he whipped them up in about two evenings, out of leftover lumber and materials he had cluttering up the garage! Here’s what their bedroom looks like now!
First of all, the color came out AMAZING. The pink and purple are so rich and vibrant, and the glow paint is SUPER cool. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a good picture of how it looks in the dark – dang it! I tried two different cameras and fiddled with my settings forever, but I am just not that clever. Boooo. But, yeah, it is SUPER cool. I painted the girls’ names on the walls above each of their beds, and I painted lots of fun little stuff all throughout the room – a ninja, a robot, lots of hearts and peace signs, a turtle (Lexi’s favorite!) and a few smatterings of stardust. When you turn out the lights, it glows SO brightly! (Which is why I can’t believe I can’t get a good picture!) Besides the fabulous paint, the new beds have just changed everything for our girls. To paraphrase the movie Stepbrothers, they have so much room for activities!
Here’s a little gallery of photos of the room, our little reveal party, and the glow-in-the-dark accents:
Some fun facts about this project:
- I found that chandelier in the trash, and spray painted it for the room. It is WONDERFUL finally having adequate lighting, especially since it turned out SO cute. I already had the spray paint, and we picked up the swag kit for under ten bucks.
- The posts for the loft bed are actually vinyl fence posts. We brainstormed for DAYS trying to figure out what to use, which would be durable, safe, and look cute – this fit the bill perfectly, and it didn’t cost much, either! The posts (and a little bit of hardware) were the only cost out of our pocket, since everything else came from past projects.
- The bed still doesn’t have a ladder! Our girls are such little monkeys, they scramble right in and out of it, but we still need to install a permanent ladder. The plan is to cut out a hatch in the bottom of one, and make a ladder underneath, so that they don’t sacrifice any of the space in their room.
I am thrilled with how this all turned out, and my girls are even more thrilled than I am. My other set of twins are ready for a room makeover of their own, now – and now that we’re such experts at loft bed design and construction, we’ll be embarking on that project really soon. Of course, I’ve already got more Disney paint picked out!
